Notary Services A Notary Public is a member of a distinct profession along side
solicitors and barristers. You
will often come across notaries who are also practising solicitors.
However unlike solicitors, the profession of a notary is recognised
worldwide and the notary's signature and seal are accepted in all
countries as evidence of the authenticity of the documents to which they
are attached. The regulatory body that governs notary services in
England and Wales is the Faculty Office of the Archbishop of Canterbury.
The main purpose of an English notary is to carry out checks
and verify signatures on documents to be used in other countries
around the world. The work of a notary will vary greatly. A notary may
simply be required to certify that a copy of a document is a true copy
of the original or that an original document is of full legal effect.
Other instances can involve the accreditation of documentary evidence
for court proceedings in other countries. This usually involves checking
that the deponent fully understands the nature of the document that he
is required to sign. A notary can deal with both private and commercial
matters such as overseas marriage or adoption, parental consent for
children travelling abroad, assisting in the registration of trademarks
or private and commercial contracts overseas, including the purchase of a
property, such as a holiday home, in another country.
